TANIA LEÓN APPOINTED DISTINGUISHED PROFESSOR OF THE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK on February 27, 2006. Tania, who joined the Brooklyn College faculty in 1985, was one of seven CUNY professors to receive this prestigious designation. The title of distinguished professor is conferred on an individual by the CUNY board in recognition of exceptional scholarly achievement and expected continued excellence. TANIA CONDUCTS THE ORQUESTRA SINFONICA DEL PRINCIPADO DE ASTURIAS in SPAIN, MARCH 16 & 17. Featured on the program are Tania León¹s Horizons for orchestra (1999), and works by Ibarra, Rachmaninoff, and Orbon. It will be the first time Horizons is being performed in Spain. <http://www.ospa.es/>

 

WORLD PREMIERE OF VARIACION: Tania León¹s Variacion for solo piano (1994) will receive its premiere at the Society for American Music Annual Conference, in Chicago, Il on March 15-29, 2006. Anna Briscoe will also perform Ritual, La Tina and Tumbao as part of a performance/lecture titled, ³Tania Leon: A Multi-Cultural Synthesis in the Piano Works² and presented by James Briscoe. SYDNEY-BASED SONIC ART ENSEMBLE PERFORMS MUSIC BY TANIA LEÓN. Formerly known as The Symour Group, Sonic Art Ensemble will perform Alapar at the Music Workshop Sydney Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, Australia on Saturday, April 1st, 2006 at 7:30pm. The evening, titled Southern Stars, also includes music by Osvaldo Golijov, Mason Bates, Andrian Pertout, and Vincent Plush, and will be recorded for national broadcast by ABC Classic FM. TANIA LEÓN HONORED WITH A WOMEN COMPOSER¹S AWARD. Given by the Latin American Women¹s Council and the Latinamerican Cultural Center of Queens in celebration of Women¹s History Month, the award honors women who are making history today.
